Funding your Study Abroad Program

KU Study Abroad can do personalized financial aid and scholarship advising for students.  Please visit 108 Lippincott Hall or call 785-864-3742 to set up an appointment.  KU students who qualify for financial aid in the form of Stafford and/or other loans, Federal Grants, and KU or outside scholarships may apply the aid to the cost of a study abroad program.  
 
KU Study Abroad supplemental scholarships are available to KU degree seeking students. Applications are available online. The scholarship application deadline is March 1 for Summer, March 15th for Fall and Academic Year programs and October 1 for Spring, Winter Break and Spring Break programs.

Freeman Foundation East Asia Internship Award

Undergraduate or graduate students who are US citizens or permanent residents may apply for a Freeman Foundation East Asia Internship Award for the summer 2025 program.  The deadline to apply is February 15th..    
 
Application Procedures

All applicants will be required to complete several documents for each study abroad application.  Below is a list of documents that will need to be completed for an application.

        a. Statement of Purpose
        b. Verification of Minimum GPA Requirement
        c. Unofficial Transcript or Advising Report
        d. 2 Recommendations
        e. Authorization to Release Student Information
        f. Student Conduct Verification
        g. Financial Aid Questionnaire        
        h. Applicants will also complete an interview with the program directors in early December.

I found the teaching aspect of this program most rewarding, for I had never had classroom experience prior to this trip. I think that this study abroad experience is unique in its formation of student teachers. We were able to implement our own lessons in the classroom and truly get a taste of what teaching, particularly EFL teaching, subsists of. Additionally, I found that working within a community was extremely rewarding - being able to share experiences with other KU students as co-teachers made it more memorable and enjoyable.

I found being able to teach and then bond with the students, as both teachers and later as friends, was incredibly rewarding. Even though we were only there for a few weeks, it made me so happy to hear the students use the phrases they learned with us and to also tell us that they had fun with the lessons. Talking to them about both school and about general life was a very rewarding experience.

The favorite part of the program for me was the students. You will never meet anyone as hard working as them, yet they still find a balance to be happy. The students are supportive and a big part of teaching. I learned more from them than them for me.
