Program Description:

International internships are powerfully transformative experiences, enabling students to connect their academic discipline with the professional sphere, gain hands-on experiences, learn (and apply) a global perspective to their trade, develop soft skills in high demand by future employers, and network with industry leaders. Through the generous support of the Freeman Foundation,  University of Kansas Study Abroad & Global Engagement (SAGE) is able to award scholarships of up to $6,000 to KU undergraduate or graduate students participating in summer or semester credit-bearing internships of six weeks’ duration or longer in one of the following Asian locations: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam.  Scholarship funds support students participating in KU-administered internship programs as well as programs offered through partner organizations or self-arranged internships.

The deadline to apply is February 1 for Summer programs, March 15 for Academic Year and Fall programs, and October 1 for Spring programs.

Eligibility

  • Degree-seeking KU student
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Started application through KU Study Abroad & Global Engagement for eligible, credit-bearing study abroad internship program
Application Procedures

All applicants will be required to submit the following documents:

  • A scholarship essay in which the applicant addresses why they have chosen to participate in an international internship. They should also discuss the academic, career, and personal goals they hope to fulfill via their international internship experience and the knowledge, skills, and abilities they hope to gain from their internship.
  • Unofficial transcript or advising report
  • Outreach service project proposal addressing the project the applicant will complete upon return from their internship abroad experience, including the goals of the project and how it will promote the Freeman Foundation Scholarship and interning abroad

Follow-Up Requirements

Scholarship recipients are expected to complete a follow-on outreach service project and volunteer engagement opportunity after returning from their international internship. The outreach project is designed to share the recipient’s experiences with the broader KU community and promote awareness of and interest in internships in East and Southeast Asia. Options include writing blog posts or submitting high-resolution photos to be used by SAGE in outreach and promotion. Students are also expected to complete a post-return impact survey.
