Program Description:


Funding your Study Abroad Program

KU Study Abroad can do personalized financial aid and scholarship advising for students.  Please visit 108 Lippincott Hall or call 785-864-3742 to set up an appointment.  KU students who qualify for financial aid in the form of Stafford and/or other loans, Federal Grants, and KU or outside scholarships may apply the aid to the cost of a study abroad program.  
 
KU Study Abroad supplemental scholarships are available to KU degree seeking students. Applications are available online. The scholarship application deadline is March 1 for Summer, March 15th for Fall and Academic Year programs and October 1 for Spring, Winter Break and Spring Break programs.

Application Procedures

All applicants will be required to complete several documents for each study abroad application.  Below is a list of documents that will need to be completed for an application.

  • Academic Plan and Approval Form
  • Authorization to Release Student Information
  • Financial Aid Questionnaire
  • Official Transcript
  • Portfolio CD (Statement of Purpose, Portfolio of Design Work, Resume)
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Student Conduct Verification
  • Two General Recommendations
  • Verification of Minimum GPA Requirement

The university system in Australia is very different. Both in terms of grading and teaching methods, you may find that you're not able to achieve the same level of success that you have at KU. I would not recommend attending UNSW if you're not able to handle criticism from instructors, as UNSW employs relatively high profile architects as its studio instructors so the studio environment can be very intense. I learned a tremendous amount while at UNSW, but it was certainly difficult at times and the program probably isn't a good fit for everyone. In terms of living at UNSW, I would NOT recommend living in university housing. It's extremely expensive and you won't have the same opportunities to meet other international students. Most Australian students live at home, and many of the European students opt to live in sharehouses in the surrounding suburbs. I lived near the beach in a house with students from the US, Denmark, England, and a few other countries. It was one of the best decisions that I have ever made.

Advise that I would give to future study abroad students would be to focus on school, but not too much. You're across the globe to learn so much more than whatever you're learning in the classroom. Take time to travel, really get to explore your host city, be spontaneous, take rewarding risks, and make meaningful relationships with all different kinds of people.

The University of New South Wales was a really prestigious school in the center of one of the greatest cities in the world. Not to mention, it was right next to the beach.
