Program Description:


Funding your Study Abroad Program

Study Abroad & Global Engagement (SAGE) offers personalized financial aid and scholarship advising for students. Schedule an in-person or virtual financial aid and scholarships advising appointment. KU students who qualify for financial aid in the form of federal and/or other loans, federal grants, and KU or outside scholarships may apply the aid to the cost of a study abroad program.

KU Study Abroad & Global Engagement Scholarships are available to KU degree-seeking students.

Applications are available online.

The scholarship application deadline is February 15 for Summer, March 1 for Fall and Academic Year programs, and October 1 for Spring, Winter Break, and Spring Break programs.

University of Hong Kong Study Abroad Scholarship
Funds provided with generous support of Richard Paegelow, KU study abroad alumnus. This scholarship is open to KU degree-seeking undergraduate students to study at the University of Hong Kong through the KU Office of Study Abroad.  Recipients must have successfully completed at least one semester of a Chinese language course prior to the Study Abroad program, meet the eligibility requirements of the University of Hong Kong, and enroll in one or more Chinese course(s) while at HKU. Awards of up to $6,500.

Application Procedures

All applicants will be required to complete several documents for each study abroad application.  Below is a list of documents that will need to be completed for an application.

  • Academic Plan and Approval Form
  • Authorization to Release Student Information
  • Autobiography
  • Financial Aid Questionnaire
  • Official Transcript
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Student Conduct Verification
  • Two General Recommendations
  • Verification of Minimum GPA Requirement

Show up early and show up often. In the first few weeks, attend the program meetings and say yes to the casual meetups, hikes, and group activities. That’s the fastest way to build a community and feel settled for the rest of the semester. Even as an introvert, stepping out of my comfort zone helped a lot, especially because I was the only University of Kansas student there. You won’t click with everyone, but you’ll find your people - and those friendships make everything easier, from learning how classes work to exploring the city and handling homesickness. Also, a keyword to anyone that will come to Hong Kong later: Mr. Wong.

The most rewarding part of the program was the people I met. I connected with exchange students from all over the world - across Europe, Korea, Australia, etc. and those friendships genuinely shaped my experience (one of my friend from Cyprus was a highlight!). I also loved that I could meet people through academic and professional spaces, like an AI forum that brought together top industry researchers. Being in the same room with that kind of community and hearing about real projects, including open-source work like Bagel team from ByteDance - was both inspiring and motivating.

Learning about a new culture, and being immersed in a new environment! I also loved being able to truly live on my own and figure things out by myself, but with people I know could help me if I truly needed them in the background.
