Funding your Study Abroad Program

Study Abroad & Global Engagement (SAGE) offers personalized financial aid and scholarship advising for students. Schedule an in-person or virtual financial aid and scholarships advising appointment. KU students who qualify for financial aid in the form of federal and/or other loans, federal grants, and KU or outside scholarships may apply the aid to the cost of a study abroad program.

KU Study Abroad & Global Engagement Scholarships are available to KU degree-seeking students.

Applications are available online.

The scholarship application deadline is February 15 for Summer, March 1 for Fall and Academic Year programs, and October 1 for Spring, Winter Break, and Spring Break programs.

Application Procedures

All applicants will be required to complete several documents for each study abroad application.  Below is a list of documents that will need to be completed for an application.?

  • Academic Plan and Approval Form
  • Authorization to Release Student Information
  • Financial Aid Questionnaire
  • Official Transcript
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Student Conduct Verification
  • Two General Recommendations
  • Verification of Minimum GPA Requirement

Meeting and speaking with those from outside the US and from other states was the most rewarding part of my experience abroad. My roommates were from Sweden, Spain, Australia, Mexico, Canada, and in the US from Maine, Maryland, Ohio, and North Carolina. I loved talking with them and sounding ideas off of each other. While we grew up across the globe, there were so many similarities that we shared. For example, the love of Harry Potter movie nights was not lost on a single one of us. But it was also interesting to compare the differences. I got to learn so much more about their cultures and day to day lives that I never would have by not meeting them in person. I found some amazing friends, even though we were all thousands of miles away from home.

My favorite part of my study abroad experience was the accessibility I had to be able to cheaply travel to other countries while I was there. There was always plenty to do in the city I lived in, but I was never limited to staying in just one place the whole semester. I also loved the freedom I had abroad. It is a different level of freedom compared to moving away to college, you're completely independent and alone. This seemed scary at first, but it wasn't long until I became familiar with the discomfort of being so far from everyone and everything I have known, and the best part was that everyone else around you was experiencing the same feelings as you. Studying abroad for even just a semester shaped how I view my age and maturity because I feel as though I became an adult and my own person the moment I touched down in Scotland.

I would advise future students to be aware that university works and functions so differently from the USA, and it will feel like you have a vast amount of free time with easy assignments, but there is very little room for error. Due to how the programs are set up you only showcase your knowledge on a few large assignments, making mistakes extremely costly
