Program Description:


Funding your Study Abroad Program

KU Study Abroad can do personalized financial aid and scholarship advising for students.  Please visit 108 Lippincott Hall or call 785-864-3742 to set up an appointment.  KU students who qualify for financial aid in the form of Stafford and/or other loans, Federal Grants, and KU or outside scholarships may apply the aid to the cost of a study abroad program.  
 
KU Study Abroad supplemental scholarships are available to KU degree seeking students. Applications are available online. The scholarship application deadline is March 1 for Summer, March 15th for Fall and Academic Year programs and October 1 for Spring, Winter Break and Spring Break programs.

Drs. Dean T. and Elisabeth Collins Scholarship
Fund created by estate gift from the late Dean and Elisabeth Collins. Awards up to $10,000 for students on semester or $20,000 for year long programs to Germany.  Open to all majors but preference for students studying music and particularly opera. Minimum 2.5 GPA requirement.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

A wide range of scholarships are also available through the German Academic Exchange Service (www.daad.org). Please contact the KU Office of Study Abroad for more information.

Application Procedures

All applicants will be required to complete several documents for each study abroad application.  Below is a list of documents that will need to be completed for an application.

  • Academic Plan and Approval Form
  • Authorization to Release Student Information
  • Autobiography
  • Financial Aid Questionnaire
  • Official Transcript
  • One General Recommendation and One Language Recommendation 
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Student Conduct Verification
  • Verification of Minimum GPA Requirement

My favorite part of the program was finding a biology class to take part in abroad. I learned so much from my professor and peers and loved learning about biology in Germany.

The University of Bonn offered excursions to its participants in cities and sites all over Germany without any extra cost to the JYP-it was all included. The opportunities to be lead through Germany by Germans were an amazing part of the program and it allowed me to see and understand the country in a way that would have been muddled up by a guidebook. Some of my favorite memories from the program involve evenings in a the parks and gardens with Germans and workers from the international office.

The beautiful city of Bonn and the University of Bonn. It was a beautiful and fun campus, and the city was a great place to be a student. The state and city government were very accommodating for all students, exchange or local (free public transport anywhere within the state was an example).

The program has many planned events for the students to participate in, including the Bonn Buddy program, which I highly recommend. There are also opportunities to conduct language tandems, which let you meet even more students at the University of Bonn.
