Eligibility

To take part in the IKI Vienna program, students must have already applied to the year-long programs at either Karlsruhe or Stuttgart, Germany, as the Vienna summer program is ideal for students accepted to these programs yet do not have the necessary German language proficiency to be admitted to the German institution without additional language training.

Language Requirement

To be accepted to the Stuttgart or Karlsruhe programs, KU students are expected to have at least 200 hours of German language training at the university-level prior to arrival at the German institution.  Students who have not yet met the language requirement are required to register for language training at IKI Vienna.

Length of Study

KU Students with no previous study of German must take at least 3 months (June, July & August) of language training.  Students with some previous German experience should contact the Office of Study Abroad to determine how much language training in Vienna may still be required, if any, to be admitted to the German institution.

Dates and costs for Vienna are listed on the IKI site at:

Summer 2015 Participant
Navigating public transportation is a skill that Vienna taught me. I had used public transportation before in the U.S., but the underground systems and the trams in Europe are on another level. I had to take the underground from my apartment to class everyday, and now I feel very confident in my ability to use public transportation in every that I have been able to travel since my experience in Vienna. Although it was intimidating at first to decipher, it is probably the most useful skill that I have gained from my time in Vienna.

Summer 2015 Participant
I am on a 15 month program with two parts: 3 months in Vienna and 12 months in Karlsruhe. My favorite part of this program was having the opportunity to live in two different cities in Europe. I loved starting out in a bigger city and then moving to a smaller one. I really appreciate having the chance to experience both. But something that I loved specifically about Vienna was that it allowed me to visit a lot of places in eastern Europe that I probably would not have had the chance to see if I was only in Germany.
