My favorite part of the program was being able meet people from so many different places. My initial goal was to immerse myself and make as many Spanish friends as possible. I ended up making friends from Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Poland and obviously Spain.

Taking classes in the local language was really hard but paid off, I learned a lot about local accents and pronunciations while also receiving my regular education on top of that.

I think that Murcia was a place that has less tourism than other larger cities in Spain. For this reason, it was easier to find opportunities to practice language skills. I think the most rewarding part of the program was to see improvements in myself. I felt like I grew a lot socially and really began to understand what a foreigner might feel like in my own country. I was reminded of how far little gestures go in making someone feel welcome.

My only advice is to take weekend trips to other places if you the time and money to do so. Definitely spend some time in your own city/region/country, but take advantage of the proximity of other places too.
The other piece of advice I would keep in mind is that you will likely have roommates, all from very different cultures and backgrounds. Respect your differences and make sure to put the effort in in order to communicate. All of my roommates spoke English, but it wasn't everyone's first language. Make sure to recognize and remember that some issues may just be miscommunication more than anything.
