While I can't speak for the other course levels, I highly recommend that students start studying and practicing their usage of traditional characters sooner rather than later. My greatest academic difficulties this summer stemmed from not recognizing vocabulary I already knew. Those who have studied Mandarin for some time or have lived experience in Mainland will also need to time to acclimate to different vocab for common items as well as alternative ways of phrasing things.

It can be scary to put yourself out there and fully immerse yourself in the community abroad when the environment is so foreign and unfamiliar. However, if you can get through the mental block and just go for it, you will have some of the most memorable and rewarding experiences/interactions of your life. The teachers and staff at NSYSU are very helpful and supportive--reach out to them if you ever need any guidance!

The program faculty were AMAZING, you can tell they enjoy teaching and you learn to apply Chinese in ways you hadn't before. I also made some some great friends on this trip that I see myself keeping in touch with.
