Program Description:

This fund was created through the generosity of the Lipsey family in memory of Lynne Hinkel Lipsey, a Lawrencian who loved the German language and culture and studied and traveled in Germany many times throughout her life. The Lipsey family created this fund to provide direct financial support for students at the University of Kansas pursuing study abroad opportunities in a German-speaking country and for German-speaking students participating in study abroad opportunities at KU through KU Study Abroad & Global Engagement. Preference is given to students participating in KU’s reciprocal exchange programs in Austria, Germany, or Switzerland and students from these institutions who are studying at KU. Support may include providing travel assistance for recipients to visit cultural sites or take part in other activities that provide a deeper understanding of the society, culture, and people with whom recipients will be interacting during their study abroad experience.

One scholarship of up to $2,500 will be awarded per academic year to a KU student and one scholarship of up to $2,500 to an exchange student coming to KU. The deadline to apply is March 15.

Degree-seeking KU undergraduate or non-degree-seeking exchange student at KU
Started application through KU Study Abroad & Global Engagement for eligible study abroad program

Application Procedures

All applicants will be required to submit the following documents online:

A scholarship personal statement in which the applicant details how they will use the scholarship funds for pursuit of travel to visit cultural sites or take part in activities that will deepen their understanding of the society, culture, and people of the country in which they are studying. Students should have a well-researched and considered plan for use of these funds. This fund is not intended to cover tuition, fees, housing costs, etc.

Follow-Up Requirements

All scholarship recipients will be expected to do a brief write-up of their experience abroad, preferably including photos. In addition, recipients will be asked to meet with the donor and family during or upon return from their study abroad experience.
