Program Description:

The Department of French, Francophone & Italian (FFIT) Studies awards scholarships to degree-seeking University of Kansas undergraduate students who have applied to an academic year, semester-long, or summer study abroad program in a French- or Italian-speaking country. A majority of classes taken abroad must be in French or Italian studies and transferable as a minimum of 6 credit hours in FFIT.  Multiple scholarships will be awarded each term.

The deadline to apply is March 1 for Summer programs, March 15 for Academic Year and Fall programs, and October 1 for Spring programs.
Please contact Professor Caroline Jewers in the Department of French, Francophone & Italian Studies with any questions regarding this scholarship.

Eligibility

  • Degree-seeking KU undergraduate
  • Started application through KU Study Abroad & Global Engagement for eligible, credit-bearing study abroad program
Application Procedures

All applicants will be required to submit the following documents:

  • A scholarship personal statement / letter of motivation (two pages maximum) in which the applicant notes any extenuating circumstances that they would like the scholarship committee to consider, including financial hardship or other challenges
  • Unofficial transcript or advising report
  • One letter of recommendation

Please note: Applicants may choose the same referee for the study abroad program application and the scholarship application, and that referee may submit the same letter for both applications.  However, applicants should tell the referee beforehand that they are applying to a study abroad program AND a scholarship, as letters should be more detailed if applicants are also applying for a scholarship.

Follow-Up Requirements

All scholarship recipients will be expected to do a brief write-up of their experience abroad, preferably including photos. In cases where the scholarship is funded by a living donor, recipients will be expected to write a thank you letter.
