Program Reviews:
Summer 2026 Participant
When I began this program my primary goals were to gain exposure to healthcare systems outside of the US, strengthen my understanding of patient care, and determine whether a career in healthcare was the right path for me. I also hoped to develop greater independence by living and traveling abroad, improve my communications skills, and challenge myself by stepping outside of my comfort zone. While I achieved those original goals, the experience ultimately provided me with so much more than I ever imagined. This opportunity helped me to grow as an individual. I developed a greater sense of confidence in myself and my ability to adapt to unfamiliar situations. Observing healthcare practices in another country broadened my understanding of patient care and reinforced the importance of cultural understanding, communication, and empathy. This experience strengthened my desire to pursue a career in healthcare while also helping me grow personally in ways that extend far beyond academics.

Summer 2025 Participant
Observing how Portuguese doctors used clear communication and were empathetic with their patients taught me the importance of cultural sensitivity. I would say be open-minded, ask questions, and pay attention to the team dynamic.

Summer 2025 Participant
Getting to watch Italian physicians up close and learn about specialties within a hospital, hands-on, helped to show me different options for my future career and provided me with long-term academic goals to keep me motivated.
