PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

LIFE ABROAD 
Enjoy living in the “small, big city” of Brussels, home to a vast student and international community where there is always a concert, museum, or mesmerizingly spacious park nearby to explore! Known as the “capital of Europe”, Brussels has tremendous global significance and has been shaped by a distinctive combination of cultural influences as evidenced in the fact there are three national languages: French, Dutch, and German.  

INTERN 
Participate in an internship for academic credit during your time in Belgium and earn 6-12 ECTS (3-6 U.S. credits). The BSoG Internship Program provides an excellent opportunity to take the knowledge from coursework and apply it in a complementary professional setting. Students will also enroll in courses at Vesalius College to complement their part-time internship. 

The ‘single’ internship involves 150–180 hours of work over the course of the semester (roughly 12–15 hours per week). Interns are required to keep a daily log and to write a 3,000-word paper at the end of the term. The single internship is evaluated with a letter grade and is worth 1 academic course, or 6 ECTS (equivalent to 3 U.S. academic credits).  

Looking for more? Consider applying for the ‘double’ internship, which is offered by a selection of Vesalius' internship partners. The ‘double’ internship is worth 2 academic courses or 12 ECTS (6 U.S. academic credits). With the ‘double’ internship, students are expected to work 280 hours per semester (approximately 25 hours per week) and, in addition to the 3,000-word paper and daily log, are required to conduct an academic research project over the course of the term.

Details for KU students interested in ISEP:

ISEP is a total immersion program. In most cases, ISEP participants register as a regular student at the host institution, take the same courses and have the same assignments, and participate in the same activities as the local students at that institution. This means that a student applying for an ISEP site must be more proactive and prepared to handle being in a location where they may be the only KU student in the program.
 

Students interested in exploring ISEP sites are encouraged to review site options and availability and then required to meet with the KU Program Coordinator for the region in which they wish to study BEFORE meeting with the KU ISEP Program Coordinator.

Costs, Financial Aid & Scholarships

ISEP-Exchange is one of the most affordable study abroad choices for KU students, as KU students pay in-state KU tuition, room and board. ISEP-Direct is less competitive, so if a student meets the eligibility requirements, they will likely have no trouble getting placed at the site of their choice. However, ISEP-Direct program costs vary substantially by site and can either be cheaper or more expensive than ISEP-Exchange.  The total cost to a KU student will include both the ISEP-Direct fees listed on the ISEP site as well as a KU ISEP fee.

KU students who qualify for financial aid in the form of Stafford and/or other loans, Pell or SEOG Grants, and scholarships may apply the aid to the cost of a Study Abroad Program.

KU Study Abroad supplemental scholarships are available to KU degree seeking students. Applications available online: KU Office of Study Abroad Scholarships. The KU scholarship application deadline is March 1 for Fall, Academic Year & Summer programs and October 1 for Spring programs.

The Andrew P. Debicki International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) Study Abroad Scholarship Fund created with generous support of Mary-Elizabeth Debicki Guinness, former Director of the KU Office of Study Abroad and former wife of Andrew Debicki, provides awards up to $2,000 for students on ISEP-Exchange programs. To apply for this scholarship, complete the KU Office of Study Abroad Scholarships application online.
